After many weeks of a fairly normal blood pressure, I checked it today and it was abnormally High. I did nothing different so I could not put my finger down on what it is exactly. Work was lite so stress levels was down, so the normal reasons were out the window. I felt no symptoms and that is what is so scary.

Normally if my blood pressure is elevated I would immediately know because of the physical symptoms of headache or tension.

I called the Dr. for answers, he told me to take special note of the times of days I take my blood pressure and note that down. He said I should do that for a few days and take it at different times. Also important to note what is it I was doing at the time.

Look for a pattern, and on the times that it is elevated, continue for a couple more days, taking the pressure at exactly the same time to see if the level remains.

All, in all friends, take you pressure daily and note it on a note pads. Not the times also, and look for a pattern.

That's all for now

Hi All.

Here is a great article I received in the mail to day. Salt is everywhere…. read on.

Hidden Salt More Dangerous than the Saltshaker

It's well known that major health organizations recommend cutting back on salt because of its link to hypertension (high blood pressure), which in turn is a major risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. In fact, the American Medical Association testified before the FDA last year urging that Americans reduce salt consumption by half over the next decade. Stephen Havas, MD, vice president for science, quality and public health at the AMA, said that 150,000 lives would be saved each year if Americans followed that advice.

Is this an over-reaction? Or a long overdue truth? The answer lies somewhere in between, according to Daily Health News contributing medical editor Andrew L. Rubman, ND. While there are plenty of health benefits in the dietary recommendation to ingest less salt, the reality is that our salt intake has little to do with what comes out of the salt shaker. As much as three-quarters of the salt in the average American's diet is from foods that are packaged, processed or ordered at a restaurant or fast food outlet. Yet advice gets over-simplified so that it seems unhealthy to sprinkle salt on your fresh tomatoes or broiled chicken — and really, that just won't make much of a difference, says Dr. Rubman. Further, salt in the diet is important to our health, he points out, noting that it is "right near the top of the list of elements required for human survival."

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

According to the American Heart Association, the average healthy adult should eat less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. Some people — including African Americans, people with a family history of high blood pressure and older adults — may benefit from a diet that doesn't exceed 1,500 milligrams/day. But the American Dietetic Association says the average American adult actually consumes 4,000 to 6,000 milligrams of sodium a day.

An important thing to know, says Dr. Rubman, is that technically there are many compounds called salts, and thus the term total salt content may mean many things. Also, when it comes to what we use on our food, a distinction should be made between sodium and salt, which often gets lost in salt-reduction recommendations. The two terms are not interchangeable — what's in the saltshaker is actually a mixture of sodium and chloride. Sometimes, says Dr. Rubman, it is the chloride, rather than the sodium, that causes problems in people with high blood pressure.

Another expert, Mark Houston, MD, author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypertension and director of the Hypertension Institute of Nashville, told me that generally speaking, "the actual physiological need for sodium chloride (salt) is only 500 to 1,000 mg per day. The relationship to potassium, calcium and magnesium intake is important in the effects of sodium chloride on the cardiovascular system." Many factors, however, influence how much salt an individual will require, including level of physical activity, climate and your unique biochemical makeup, and some people may require more salt than that.

RESEARCH FOUNDATIONS FOR THE RECOMMENDATION

All that notwithstanding, there is evidence showing that cutting back on sodium can help reduce blood pressure. A 2007 British Medical Journal study assessing trials including prehypertension patients found that those who participated in a lifestyle modification program that included a 25% to 35% reduction in sodium lowered their risk of cardiovascular problems by 25%. Also, other research shows better blood pressure control can be achieved by using the “DASH” (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) strategy, which emphasizes a whole-diet approach. The DASH diet is rich in vegetables, fat-free or low-fat dairy, nuts, seeds and legumes, poultry, lean meats and fish, fruit and grains. It can bring significant drops in blood pressure in conjunction with low sodium consumption.

SENSITIVE TYPES

Even so, reducing sodium levels doesn't always make a difference. Only about one-third of those with hypertension are "salt-sensitive," meaning their blood pressure will react to salt. Dr. Rubman points out that how sensitive you are to sodium depends on a number of factors. For instance, the elderly and the obese are more vulnerable, as are African Americans.

All in all, says Dr. Rubman, excess salt consumption can make about one-third of the population vulnerable to hypertension… though he acknowledges it can be difficult to ascertain whether that describes you or not. If you've observed a relationship between your salt consumption and your blood pressure, and therefore have reason to believe you are salt sensitive… and also if you have renal disease, heart disease and hypertension for example, your health will likely benefit if you eat less salt — ask your physician. For the rest of us who choose a healthy diet, it's just not much of an issue, says Dr. Rubman. (For more on salt sensitivity, see Daily Health News, July 25, 2006.)

WHAT TO DO?

If you believe — or your doctor has told you — that cutting back on salt would benefit your health, it's important to focus your attention on the measures that will make a real difference. Here's how:

Eat whole foods, emphasizing fresh vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. This is a way to avoid the sodium used to enhance flavor in packaged foods.

Read labels carefully. Seemingly healthy foods are often loaded with sodium. Also serving sizes may be unrealistically small, so look at sodium content in relation to serving size. For example, a four-inch oat bran bagel has 451 mg of sodium… one ounce of salted, hard pretzels 486 mg… a single slice of luncheon meat contains about 350 mg… one cup of Cheerios has 200 mg. When you are evaluating intake from these sources, be clear about what you will actually eat — not just what you should eat.

Be aware of other ingredients that contain sodium — including baking soda, baking powder, disodium phosphate or other compounds with "sodium" (or the symbol Na) in the name on the label.

Don't buy or eat snacks or packaged foods that list a high sodium content. Limit canned soups and vegetables, which usually contain excess salt to enhance flavor and improve shelf life.

Aim to lower your blood pressure through a healthful diet. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute offers a free guide: "In Brief: Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure with DASH" at www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/dash_inbrief.htm.

Avoid or limit fast food.

Following a diet that emphasizes whole foods over prepared and packaged ones is healthier in every way. Unless your doctor has told you or you otherwise have reason to believe you are "salt sensitive," you can freely enjoy a sprinkling of salt on your fresh food whenever you like.

We often think and its also proven that using salt in your diet will cause an increase in your blood pressure. There is a negative effect on the blood pressure where ever high salt intake is involved. However, avoiding salt is not the only thing that needs to be done. A dietary program for hypertension is the advisable course of action. This program will engage in efforts to prevent consumption of foods high in cholesterol or sugar, in effect this diet will help prevent cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

A management program of such a nature is the DASH diet, Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. Changes must be made to your entire diet when taking up this particular dietary program for hypertension, removing salt from your diet is not enough, in order to control high blood pressure and keep it regulated your meal menu must be revised. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute conducted a study from which the DASH diet was constructed. Based on this study your blood pressure can be regulated by simply eating foods low in cholesterol and saturated fats. Also it is necessary to eat foods high in essential nutrients.

The following elements are DASH's core focus.

It is imperative that you make a drastic decrease in the body's overall fat and saturated fat intake. Avoid foods that taste good but are bad for you if you are a hypertensive individual. Stay away from foods like fast foods, snack food, and desserts. On most occasions foods that taste good may have a high fat and sugar content.

Prepare meals that are high in fiber and whole grain. Substituting whole wheat bread for white bread and high fiber cereals instead of plain cereals. There must be a significant increase in fruit and raw vegetable intake. One of the best fruits to include in your diet is pineapple. There is a Pineapple diet but this is another topic for discussion.

A reduction of sweets and sugary drinks are definitely part of this program. Along with, taking vitamins, drinking water and lots of it.

During my research and preparation of this article, it was discovered that many individuals who try to lower there sugar intake substitute with a sweetener containing Aspartame. I have personally experienced a raise in my blood pressure due to aspartame. It was drastically raised by 10 points. Aspartame is also known as a poison and contaminates our blood. Most diet products contains aspartame, do abstain from eating anything which contains this substance.

A full menu and lifestyle change must be observed when trying to follow a dietary program for hypertension. However, it is always wise to consult a physician before you make any drastic changes in your diet. If you are pregnant and have hypertension the DASH diet is one of your best diet options.

Can the DASH diet cure hypertension? Well, I cannot be certain of that, however I can guarantee that it will be a reduced and controlled. Hence, pursuing a dietary program for hypertension is a great option. It will enable you to live longer and its deadly complications will be nothing but an after thought.

Rice is not known for any nutritional benefits, but research has shown that rice is an excellent blood pressure reducer when prepared in a specific way.

Yes, the title of this post is correct. Its been shown where Rice is a very good high blood pressure reducer. In his book "Control High Blood Pressure without drugs, Dr. Robert Rowan, M.D Writes the following

"About fifty years ago a major advance in understanding the relationship between diet and treatment of hypertension was made by Dr. Walter Kempner of Duke University. He was responsible for what has come to be known as the rice diet. Here is how it happened: A thirty three-year-old woman suffering from severe kidney disease was told to remain on diet of plain unsalted rice for two weeks and then to return for further evaluation. However, the woman did not return for two months……..When Kempner finally examined her, he found a remarkable difference: Her blood pressure had come down, and her ECG had improved as did the serious aspects of the kidney diseases. "

Kempner went on to recommend the diet to several of his patients and 2/3rds of them showed similar blood pressure reduction, improvement in kidney function and greater strength in cardiac muscle.

Incidentally, this was the first time low salt was seen as a high blood pressure reducer. In this present day, a low salt diet is seen as an important lifestyle change high blood pressure sufferers should make.

Note well, the rice diet is difficult to follow, moreover, it does not provide a complete nutritional balance that the body needs. It is also not a sexy diet. It is for these reasons that it is not a popular remedy for high blood pressure.

Given a choice between high blood pressure, possible kidney failure and other medical complications, I will take the rice diet any day as a high blood pressure reducer. Besides, It can always be complimented with other exciting and sexy foods.

True Story …..

Ok, so today after weeks of being under control, my blood pressure started acting up. I was working under pressure to finish a technology report for a client. I believe the stress of doing this was the reason for the peak in my blood pressure.

My Blood pressure reading was 155/94, my head and neck had tension, and my chest was feeling a bit heavy. I took a break and went to rest for couple minutes with some jazz music. My blood pressure reading was about 150/90 when I took the reading 10 Minutes later

My Personal Assistant Wendy, who is also a natural health enthusiast, made me a drink. The drink was made by mixing usual high blood pressure herbs.

This drink instantly lowered my high blood pressure within minutes. Folks I mean with 5 minutes my blood pressure was down to 128/78. I could not believe it, I was shocked. I took the reading three times and the average was 125/77.

With Wendy's permission, I am going to share this with you . This worked for me, I am not saying that it will work for you, but it will not hurt to try it. Again, as usual, consult your doctor before trying anything new.

This remedy actually reduced my blood pressure at least 10-15 points within 5 minutes.

4 Herbs were used to make the drink, they are:

1. One Ginger tea bag

2. One Cinnamon tea bag

3. One Chamomile tea bag

4. Four cloves of garlic

Steps to creating the drink:

Crush the cloves of garlic and place it in a mug

Add all the tea bags mentioned above

Pour some boiling water into the mug

Let is set for 5 minutes

Sweeten to your taste with brown sugar

As indicated earlier, I took my blood pressure before and after I drank the drink, and I would advise you to do the same if you are going to try it. Within five minutes of drinking the tea, I felt the symptoms fading away. Take your blood pressure again multiple times after, you will notice that it has decreased drastically - and it's as simple as that.

For added relief you can rest while listening to some jazz. This will help calm your brain. You can also take some deep breaths in and out while you close your eyes and relax. Just doing these few simple actions and consuming this drink, instantly lowered my high blood pressure.

Recently, I visited webmd.com and read an article about lifestyle changes. What struck me is that, usually we are told to focus on lowering our diastolic blood pressure, (that is the number below the line in the blood pressure reading). What was interesting about this article was that it advocates that we should also aim to lower our systolic blood pressure, and this in turn will bring down the diastolic blood pressure significantly.

The article was providing 5 lifestyle tips to lower high blood pressure

Here is an exerpt from the aticle

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is critical to preventing and treating high blood pressure, which significantly reduces your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Not only can diet and exercise lower high blood pressure, but it can also make your blood pressure medications work better.

"The chart shows lifestyle changes can reduce systolic blood pressure (the "top" number in a blood pressure reading). By lowering your systolic blood pressure, your diastolic blood pressure would likely come down as well. "

Here is the Chart

If you are scared of the side effects of prescription drugs in fighting hypertension, here are 5 Natural methods to help keep you blood pressure normal. You can do these along side your medication.. they have no known side effect..

Are you like me and fed up of using medication to lower your blood pressure? Those pills that you take every day with all these negative side effects. At last in the power of five easy steps you can reduce your blood pressure.

Due to the fact that high blood pressure will usually occur with little or no symptoms, your blood pressure may be high and you have no idea, because of this it may be left untreated and lead to a dangerous disease called hypertension. Although medication is often used to lower high blood pressure, there are several natural steps to take in order to help yourself naturally cure hypertension.

It is first important to assess your diet. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to lower high blood pressure. The things that you eat have a major impact on your blood pressure. In order to naturally cure hypertension, focus on the things that you are putting into your body. Eating fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy on a daily basis, and if you do not have high blood pressure, eating well will help you to keep it in safe range, as it is one of hypertension's prevention clauses. It is said that drinking a glass of wine once in a while and indulging in some dark chocolate can really help reduce blood pressure, the key however is moderation.

Other causes of high blood pressure are stress and anxiety. Although these alone may not cause its occurrence, they play a significant role in aggravating it, or may aggravate situations in which your blood pressure might be raised. Therefore, in order to lower high blood pressure, try to keep a handle on your stress and anxiety whenever possible. One can also try stress relieving methods as well. In order to naturally cure hypertension, try to relieve as much of the stress in your life as possible.

Being overweight or obese is a major cause of high blood pressure. Be sure to try every method possible to lose any excess weight that you have, so that there may be less weight for your body to need to carry around. Your heart, lungs, and the rest of your body systems will have less work to perform, which will help to lower your high blood pressure. Participate in an exercise program and strengthen your hearts and lungs. Getting enough exercise is one of the best ways that you can loose excess weight, enhance the circulatory system and eventually lead to lower blood pressure.

The next step is avoiding salt, though it is a part of your diet it was placed on its own so I could expand on it. Salt also known as sodium, makes up one of the two major minerals which help the flow of substances in and out of the cell. This sodium also plays a major role in the fluid leveling system in the body. Too much salt intake leads to an increase in the fluid levels which in turn leads to a higher blood volume. There will be absolute rise in your blood pressure, do try to avoid excessive ingestion of salt and you will feel the difference by the next day.

Lastly, to lower high blood pressure, and help keep it down, you want to monitor your blood pressure and document it daily. As an alternative to always going to the doctor's office to monitor your blood pressure it is advisable to purchase your own blood pressure monitor. This will enable you to take stock of your own blood pressure, where you will have hands on knowledge of the differences in your body by making these lifestyle changes.

Here you have it five simple pointers so you can naturally cure hypertension. If you have high blood pressure, or if you know that you are at risk for high blood pressure, take a pre-emptive strike and keep your high blood pressure within normal range. This will allow you to maintain the healthiest lifestyle possible. Do it naturally!
